Our spine is comprised of piled up bony structures called vertebrae.
In between these vertebrae, we have anatomical cushions called discs that buffer our every movement and help maintain the stability of the spine.
Discs are composed of a gelatin like substance in the center and an outer ring that helps maintain the gelatin in place. The center is composed of mainly water along with loose collagen fibers. With certain conditions such as exposure to increased stressors to the spine (gymnastics, runners, etc.) and even in the natural process of aging, Disc Degeneration Disease (DDD) may be a factor or a cause of pain. The initiation of symptoms may be sooner than you think. The disc could start with some degree of dehydration that eventually, may cause a progression to increased degeneration of discs and other complications.
DDD is a condition whose treatments may vary depending on the stage of the disease. In early phases, there are several procedures that may improve the pain and numbness.
- Numbness of the extremity
- Pain in site
- Irradiation of pain to a arm or leg
- Activities that include lifting, bending and twisting usually worsens the pain.
- Pain may improve with certain positions
In early stages, patients resources rely on pain medication or injections to control the pain and symptoms, without providing changes or solutions to the underlying cause of the condition. Regenerative medicine offers a new conservative and therapeutic option that reduces local inflammation and pain, while also promoting and secreting factors that contribute to the healing properties of the body. It has been found that direct injections to discs may increase the volume and height of your discs and reducing or even disappearing common symptoms in early stage patients.
Platelet Rich Plasma or commonly known as PRP, is a concentration of platelets we produce from the drawing of your blood. When an injury occurs in your body, platelet cells migrate to the lesion site and release certain growth factors that promote other components to migrate and also to begin with the healing and regeneration process. By drawing and centrifuging your blood in sterile conditions, we concentrate all of the cellular components of your blood:
- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
We administer platelet rich plasma and stem cell solution directly on the discs to provide growth factors and proteins that promote the healing process. We believe that by combining the use of our stem cells with your growth factors from your platelets, we potentiate/ increase the healing results.
